Hôtel 5 étoiles à Nîmes
The history of Le Grand Hôtel Dieu
LE GRAND HÔTEL DIEU
Centuries of history in the heart of Nîmes
Before becoming a hotel, 12 rue de la République formed part of a complex closely linked to the history of Nîmes: the former Hôtel-Dieu.
The institution dates back to 1313, when Raymond Ruffi founded an establishment intended to receive and care for the sick. Over the centuries, the Hôtel-Dieu evolved, expanded and changed along with the city.
The building seen today notably bears the mark of several major architectural campaigns undertaken in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

LE GRAND HÔTEL DIEU
A building transformed through the centuries
The architectural history of the former Hôtel-Dieu was written in stages.
A major building campaign took place in the 17th century, followed by further transformations in the 18th century. In 1830, the complex underwent another architectural evolution that helped give it part of its current appearance.
The establishment retained its hospital vocation until the early 20th century. After the hospital closed in 1934, a new chapter opened: the building at 12 rue de la République became, among other uses, the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and took the name Hôtel Consulaire.

Heritage still visible today
History is not told here by dates alone.
It remains present in the building’s architecture: volumes, façades, grand staircase and historic decoration still accompany visitors through the spaces.
Part of the former Hôtel-Dieu has been listed as a Historic Monument since 2000. This protection covers, at 12 rue de la République, the façades and roofs, the grand staircase and a historic room on the first floor.
Inside Le Grand Hôtel Dieu, frescoes, mouldings, mosaics and decorative features continue this distinctive identity today.

LE GRAND HÔTEL DIEU
From Hôtel Consulaire to Le Grand Hôtel Dieu
After several decades devoted to the economic life of Nîmes, the building began a new transformation.
The City of Nîmes became owner of the Hôtel Consulaire in 2018, as part of the redevelopment of this city-centre area and the development of the new hotel hub and convention centre.
The building was then taken over for conversion into a hotel. After extensive renovation and fitting-out works, it welcomed Le Grand Hôtel Dieu in 2026, a five-star, 70-room hotel with restaurant, spa and reception spaces.
A new purpose for a place that has accompanied the transformations of Nîmes for centuries.

The story continues
Today, staying at Le Grand Hôtel Dieu also means inhabiting, for a few days, a building that has known several lives.
Former place of care, then Hôtel Consulaire and now hotel, it preserves the traces of these successive periods while fully belonging to the contemporary city.
Heritage is therefore not simply a backdrop: it is part of the place’s identity.
